Don’t Have Health Insurance? Here’s What Can Happen

Not having health insurance can be a significant risk to many people in the United States. Unfortunately, as of November 2022, there are 30 million people who are still uninsured. So, what can happen when you don’t have health insurance?

Not having health insurance in today’s world comes with many risks in the United States. Most of those risks relate to the costs and debt of those without insurance, but some other risks can take a toll on your mental and physical health.

Why Don’t Some People Have Health Insurance?

Many people go uninsured because they think it costs too much; however, many plans out there can be suitable for your budget and lifestyle. Places like the Insurance Marketplace are great for comparing different plans and prices. A survey published by the Kaiser Family Foundation found other reasons why people don’t have health insurance:

  • Coverage not affordable: 73.7%
  • Not eligible for coverage: 25.3%
  • Do not want or need: 21.3%
  • Signing up was too complex or confusing: 18.4%
  • Cannot find a plan that meets needs: 18%
  • Lost job: 2.8%

I understand health insurance can be tricky, but you should still care for your health. Every once in a while, some people may go without health insurance for a short time because of unemployment, or they may switch over to their spouse’s health insurance instead. In the end, getting on some health insurance plan is recommended.

Risks Of Not Having Health Insurance

Cost. We know that having health insurance can be costly; however, not having health insurance can be even more expensive than most people realize. Without health insurance, you’re responsible for covering your entire medical bills, which can add up quickly. Having coverage can help reduce that cost.

Debt. This ties into the cost aspect mentioned above. Many people go into debt because of medical bills. Whether it’s simple doctor visits or emergency room visits, the bills rack up and put a lot of Americans in debt. Some people can go bankrupt without coverage because they can’t keep up with the payments.

Tax penalties. In some states, people without insurance can get hit with a penalty on their taxes, costing them more money in the long run than those with health insurance. Although it’s not every state that you have to pay a tax penalty, California and the District of Columbia are some states that have it.

You are not receiving care. Some people can even be turned away from medical services or routine check-ups for not having health insurance. If you don’t have health insurance, you can still receive treatment at any emergency room. This can lead to many problems within hospitals and for people who have health insurance. If you don’t have health insurance and are going into the emergency room because of a cold, you’re taking up rooms and beds for those who may have serious medical emergencies.

Mental and physical health. Not having health insurance can put a lot of stress on the body and mind. Some people may be in a constant state of worry if they’re going to have an emergency or need to see a doctor because of the costs. Not having health insurance can often lead to people putting off doctor visits, potentially worsening cases if they’re sick and don’t know it. On the other hand, having health coverage gives peace of mind to many.

Where To Get Health Insurance

The Insurance Marketplace is a great place to start looking at health insurance. You can “shop” around for the best plan that suits your needs and wants. You can also get in touch with your employer and see their coverage benefits. You may have some coverage even if you work for a small business. Another way to get health insurance is to contact a local insurance agent. Speaking with someone who knows everything about health insurance is the best way to avoid a confusing journey with health insurance.
