Moving to Savannah and Need a Health Insurance Agent?

If you are moving to Savannah, Georgia, you may need a new health insurance agent. If so, I can guide you on what you need to know to ensure you have coverage when you move.

When it comes to moving, there are so many things to take into consideration. Some things include packing up your belongings, hiring movers, enrolling your children in new schools, turning on utilities at your new place, and much more. One thing you want to make sure that doesn’t get lost in the hustle is having the right health insurance when you move to Savannah.

What Happens if I Have Individual Health Insurance?

If you have individual health insurance that you purchase through an independent insurance agent, you can do so for yourself or your family during the annual “open enrollment period.” This is the time when everyone is eligible to apply for new health insurance or within 60 days of certain qualifying life events.

Certain circumstances, known as ‘life events,’ allow you to enroll in a health plan outside the annual open enrollment period. One of those life events is if you move to Savannah from a different state and have access to new health plans.

You could experience a coverage gap between the time your current insurance plan ends and your new plan begins. If that’s the case, there are non-Affordable Care Act-compliant products, such as short-term health insurance, that can help temporarily until you can enroll in a new major medical plan. These short-term health plans have limited benefits, though. There is also the chance that you could be charged more or denied coverage based on pre-existing conditions. I will be able to help you determine if short-term coverage is a good option for you.

What If I Have Coverage Through My Employer?

Ask your employer whether it offers health insurance benefits and if you are eligible to participate in your employer’s group plan. It depends on the employer regarding benefits for full-time and part-time employees. Some only offer benefits to full-time employees, and some employers only pay a portion of your health insurance premiums.

There Are So Many Health Agents to Choose From!

Yes! You’re right; there are many independent health insurance agents in Savannah. However, you need to consider several things when choosing the one you want to work with.

Experience. It’s essential to consider the years the agent has been in business and what they specialize in. You want to find an agent with years of knowledge to back them. It is great to choose one who focuses on health and life insurance instead of one who may specialize in business or property insurance. If you have Medicare or are of Medicare age, you will undoubtedly want to work with an agent who handles Medicare insurance.

Qualifications. First, you must ensure the agent is licensed to sell insurance in Georgia. Agents also have to take continuing education credits to maintain their licenses. Next, find out what the agent’s credentials are.

Support. The agent you choose should be available to you year-round. You don’t want to work with someone who signs you up for a policy and never hear from them again. Your agent should understand your goals and needs and be willing to work with you anytime.

Advocacy. You want to choose an agent who will work hard to find the best plan and coverage for you or your family. An independent insurance agent doesn’t work for an insurance carrier, which allows them to hustle to find a mix of choices for you. An independent insurance agent is like your personal shopper – trying to help you find the best plan.
