National Nutrition Month

March is National Nutrition Month!

National Nutrition Month® is an annual nutrition education and information campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The campaign, celebrated each year during the month of March, focuses on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.

History of National Nutrition Month

National Nutrition Month® dates back to 1973 when a presidential proclamation, television ads and bumper stickers featured “Invest in YourselfBuy Nutrition” as the theme for a National Nutrition Week campaign.

This year’s theme, “Celebrate a World of Flavors,” embraces global cultures, cuisines and inclusivity, plus highlights the expertise of registered dietitian nutritionists.

Get Healthy in Honor of National Nutrition Month

One in 4 Americans will die of heart disease in the United States [CDC]. Cancer is the second leading cause of death, after heart disease, in the United States [CDC]. In addition, approximately 1.4 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes every year [ADA].

In recognition of National Nutrition Month this March, Rob Edgar Insurance encourages you to make small changes and explore food habits that can help improve diet, nutrition literacy and healthier outcomes.

Here are some healthy tips in honor of National Nutrition Month for 2022:

Move your body

Nutrition doesn’t end at what we eat. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics encourages making exercise an integral part of our lives. Try a new activity like Zumba, swimming, or spinning to keep workouts fresh and exciting.

Find inspiration

Feeling stale in the kitchen? Pinterest provides an infinite loop of recipes and inspiration to kick-start any nutrition journey. Picking up a new cookbook or following a cool food blogger works, too!

Meet with a dietitian

Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day is also in March.

Registered dietitians provide you with a detailed meal plan that makes sense for your lifestyle and goals. Many, if not most, health insurance plans cover the cost of dietitian services, and city health departments sometimes offer complementary services or charge sliding-scale fees.

Medicare offers preventive services, like heart disease screening tests.
