Special Enrollment Period (SEP) Ends August 15 for Marketplace Coverage
Time is running out to enroll in Marketplace coverage during the SEP. Now through August 15, consumers will receive a new eligibility determination and can reselect their same plan (with lower premiums and the same deductible and out-of-pocket costs) or enroll in a new plan.
Choosing a new plan could be a good option for some current enrollees. This is because many will be eligible for more generous coverage (such as a silver or gold plan) for the same or lower cost of their current plan. But those who switch to a new plan may be subject to a new deductible and out-of-pocket maximum—so it is essential to weigh all options before switching plans.

Current enrollees with retroactive coverage effective dates can enroll in any plan (and are not restricted to a certain plan category). Dependents can be added to coverage during the SEP. Consumers can add dental coverage to their existing marketplace coverage or otherwise change their dental plan (without changing their medical plan).
Consumers who have had a birthday since the open enrollment period will be rated based on their current age (meaning premiums could be higher for some current enrollees who have had a birthday since enrollment).
In a press release this month, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator, Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, stated, “Health coverage provides the peace of mind that every American deserves.” “Through August 15, the American people have an opportunity to select a quality health care plan that works for them, with costs that are at an all-time low. CMS is dedicated to ensuring people in our communities have the coverage they need.”
